The scriptures prescribe that a Sadhak should perform Trikal Sandhya; that is, worship Gayatri three times every day (in the morning, at noon and in the evening).  It is very beneficial if during worship, meditation on the effulgence of Gayatri is done intensively.  For specific purposes, when more energy is required, Gayatri Anushthan is prescribed. When a long journey is proposed to be undertaken, special food and adequate money are saved for use in transit.  Similarly, doing an anushthan is like saving money for a journey.  When this energy capital is accumulated, the Sadhak’s journey through life, whether in mundane or spiritual pursuit, becomes easier and smoother.
